In 2013 corruption had become a prominent issue in Guyana. Calypso lyrics decrying corruption and excess had managed to irritate the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) government of Prime Minister Sam Hinds to such a degree that new Calypso songs had been banned from state controlled radio stations.
