Profile: Uganda

As in previous years, allegations of large-scale corruption involving senior politicians and government officials dominate the Ugandan news. The most notable of these cases in 2012 involved the alleged theft of about US$20 million of development assistance at the prime minister's office. Originally intended for the Peace Recovery and Development Plan for northern Uganda, the funds were allegedly diverted to the personal accounts of staff in the prime minister's office, the finance ministry and Bank of Uganda. Allegations were made of the involvement of senior government members. As a result of this case, in November 2012 budget support donors suspended aid to the Ugandan government for a period of at least six months.
